Sufism and the Qur'an: An Analysis of MPTT-I’s Qur'anic Interpretation

This study is a qualitative investigation aimed at understanding and analyzing the Sufi interpretative model within the Majelis Pengkajian Tauhid–Tasawuf Indonesia (MPTT-I) movement. As one of the modern Sufi movements that has influenced Acehnese society and communities beyond, MPTT-I is characterized by its strong integration of Qur’anic teachings in the transmission of Sufi education. This feature is clear in the writings of its murshid, the explanations of his khalifah, and its principal textual references. Data were collected through observation, interviews, content analysis, and a literature review to identify the interpretative approaches employed by this movement. The study concludes that MPTT-I utilizes several types of Sufi exegesis, including ishārī (esoteric), naẓarī (theoretical esoteric), and exoteric Sufi interpretations. These findings indicate that the movement affirms the inward dimensions of Qur’anic meaning while also acknowledging its outward, literal dimensions. Furthermore, the study suggests that MPTT-I synthesizes two major Sufi traditions: practical Sufism and philosophical Sufism.
