Abstract

Current Islamic education faces the challenges of scholarly dichotomy and pedagogical stagnation amidst the dynamics of the third millennium. This study aims to analyze Azyumardi Azra’s progressive thoughts on the transformation of Islamic education as a strategic solution to these challenges. The research method employed is qualitative, specifically a library research approach, which critically examines Azyumardi Azra’s primary works and other relevant literature through a descriptive-analytical lens. The results indicate that Azra proposes an integration strategy between traditional Islamic values and modern science through curriculum modernization, democratization of education, and the strengthening of systems adaptive to technology. Azra's primary emphasis lies in abolishing the dichotomy between religious and general sciences to produce a Muslim generation that is both intellectual and possesses noble character (akhlaq al-karimah). It is concluded that Azra’s thought provides a solid foundation for developing inclusive Islamic education that respects pluralism and remains relevant to modern societal needs without uprooting Islamic traditional values. This study recommends the necessity of concrete educational policy implementation in integrating research-based curricula and technology within Islamic educational institutions to enhance global competitiveness.
