In the Bugis community of Sinjai, customary marriage practices signify a sacred unity and family honor that can impose strict conditions, especially for individuals seeking to fulfill their marriage goals. High marriage costs are a primary issue, compounded by modernity and free social interactions, which shift the purpose of marriage away from its religious intentions. Consequently, marrying according to Bugis customs implies a significant financial expenditure, prompting some individuals to resort to compromises and tactics as alternatives. This study examines how compromises and tactics are implemented in Bugis marriages in Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study methodology, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation. Data is analyzed from the perspectives of Islamic jurisprudence, Bugis cultural traditions, and ethics. The study identifies two main types of tactics: first, compromise or tactics as a means to proceed with marriage despite obstacles; second, tactics as a specific goal or interest underlying the desire to marry. Five cases are identified for research: political marriage, elopement, polygamy strategies, passampo siri (a form of symbolic compensation), and pooling resources (dui menre). The findings indicate that while compromises and strategies in marriage may have flaws and could potentially have negative implications if mishandled, they can also function as a compromise to the stringent Bugis customs. This study highlights the importance of implementing social ethics to understand marriage not only in a legalistic sense but also as a sincere worldly and spiritual unity, ensuring that marriage prioritizes public welfare and avoids harm.
