THE ROLE OF THE IMAM KHATIB AS A MEDIATOR BETWEEN NUSYUZ AND SYIQAQ

This research aims to examine the role of the Imam Khatib as a mediator in resolving cases of nusyuz and syiqaq between married couples in Jorong Lubuk Gobing, Ranah Batahan District, West Pasaman Regency. The background of this research is the increasing number of domestic conflicts and limited access for the public to formal legal institutions such as the Religious Court, leading people to opt for non-formal channels thru mediation by religious figures. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data was obtained thru observation, interviews with the Imam Khatib, married couples, and community leaders, as well as documentation. Data analysis is conducted thru the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that the causes of nusyuz and syiqaq include infidelity, misuse of cell phones, slander, and economic pressure. The Imam Khatib plays a role by providing advice based on Islamic law and customary values, as well as facilitating family discussions to achieve peace. The success rate of mediation reached 37.5%, supported by public trust and the Imam Khatib’s closeness to religious and customary values. The main obstacle is the couples’ poor understanding of household rights and obligations. This research concludes that the Imam Khatib plays a strategic role in mitigating domestic conflicts and offers a religious and culturally based mediation model that is relevant for application in other areas.
