Building a Harmonious Family in the Qur'an: Analysis of Sternberg's Theory of Love in Establishing Household Harmony

Abstract

The importance of family harmony is a fundamental human aspiration. Family harmony significantly influences the religious upbringing and education of children, who are witnesses to the lives of both parents. This research explores how to establish a harmonious family according to the Qur'an, by analyzing Sternberg's theory of love. According to Sternberg, an ideal marriage is constructed on three concepts: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Similarly, the Qur'an portrays a harmonious family with three principles: sakīnah (tranquility), mawaddah (affection), and raḥmah (mercy). This study is a library research, drawing data from various literary sources such as books. The approach employed is descriptive-analytical, involving the presentation of data followed by analysis aligned with Qur'anic teachings. The findings reveal that Sternberg's theory of love contributes to building a harmonious family by emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy sexual relationship within marriage, as depicted through the components of intimacy and passion. This perspective resonates with Qur'anic verses such as Surah Al-Baqarah (2:223), An-Nisa' (4:19), and Al-Baqarah (2:187), which highlight the significance of sexual relations within the family. Additionally, the comprehensive unity between husband and wife in all aspects of life is illustrated by the component of commitment, consistent with Qur'anic teachings, including Surah An-Nisa' (4:1).
