Focus

Substantia: Jurnal Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin focuses on the dissemination of high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarly articles and conceptual studies in the field of Ushuluddin sciences. The journal publishes research articles, theoretical analyses, and book reviews covering diverse topics such as Aqidah, Philosophy, Islamic Thought, Qur’anic and Hadith Studies, Comparative Religion, Sociology of Religion, and Sufism. Through these publications, Substantia aims to advance scholarly discourse and foster new perspectives in the field.

Scope

The journal welcomes submissions from academicians, researchers, and practitioners on topics including, but not limited to:

Substantia accepts original research articles, conceptual paradigms, theoretical frameworks, academic research, and studies on religious practices that contribute to the development of Ushuluddin sciences.


Peer Review Process

Substantia: Jurnal Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin implements a rigorous double-blind peer review policy. Both authors’ and reviewers’ identities remain confidential throughout the review process. Manuscripts are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Originality and scholarly contribution of the work

  • Alignment of methodology with the research topic

  • Depth and rigor of analysis

  • Clarity and coherence of communication

  • Recommendations from expert reviewers

The standard timeframe for the review and evaluation process is three to five months from the date of initial submission. Articles may be submitted in Indonesian, English, or Arabic; however, all abstracts must be provided in both Indonesian and English.

The editorial board reserves full discretion to accept or reject submitted manuscripts based on the outcome of the review process.


Publication Frequency

Substantia: Jurnal Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin is published twice a year, in April and October.


Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content, supporting the principle that making research freely available to the public enhances the global exchange of knowledge.


Publication Fee

Substantia applies the following author fees:

  • Article Submission Fee: IDR 0 (No fee is charged at submission)

  • Article Publishing Charge (APC): IDR 800,000

Authors are only required to pay the APC upon acceptance of their article for publication.


Plagiarism Policy

All submissions to Substantia: Jurnal Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin are subject to plagiarism screening using reliable detection tools (such as Turnitin). Manuscripts must have a similarity index of less than 25%. The editorial team will immediately reject manuscripts that demonstrate plagiarism or self-plagiarism.

Definitions and Types of Plagiarism:

  • Literal Copying: Copying word-for-word, in whole or in part, without appropriate permission, acknowledgment, or citation.

  • Substantial Copying: Reproducing a substantial part of another’s work without acknowledgment or citation; substantial may refer to both the quantity and quality of copied material.

  • Paraphrasing: Rewording ideas, words, or phrases from a source without proper citation or acknowledgment, which constitutes plagiarism.

All articles are checked for similarity before being forwarded to peer reviewers.


Publication Ethics

Substantia: Jurnal Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin adheres to the highest standards of publication ethics, following the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines for journal editors. The journal is committed to ensuring ethical behavior by all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher (UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh, Indonesia).

Ethical Guidelines for Journal Publication

Publishing in a peer-reviewed journal forms the foundation for the development of a coherent and respected body of knowledge. It reflects the quality and credibility of the authors, the supporting institutions, and the journal itself. All parties involved in publication are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct.

Publisher Responsibilities
UIN Ar-Raniry is dedicated to overseeing all stages of the publication process, ensuring that editorial decisions are independent of commercial influences. The Editorial Board supports communications with other journals and publishers when necessary.

Editorial Responsibilities

  • Publication Decisions: Editors are responsible for deciding which manuscripts to publish, guided by the journal’s editorial policies and relevant legal requirements.

  • Fair Play: Editors evaluate manuscripts without regard to the authors’ race, gender, religious beliefs, or political philosophy.

  • Confidentiality: Editors and staff must maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts.

  • Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest: Editors must not use unpublished information for their own research without explicit consent.

Reviewer Responsibilities

  • Contribution to Decisions: Peer reviewers assist editors in making publication decisions and in improving manuscript quality.

  • Promptness: Referees unable to review in a timely manner should inform the editor promptly.

  • Confidentiality: Manuscripts are confidential documents.

  • Objectivity: Reviews should be objective, well-argued, and free from personal criticism.

  • Acknowledgment of Sources: Reviewers should point out relevant uncited work and flag any potential overlap with other published material.

  • Conflict of Interest: Reviewers should not review manuscripts where they have competing interests.

Author Responsibilities

  • Reporting Standards: Authors must present accurate, original research with sufficient detail and references.

  • Originality and Plagiarism: Submitted work must be original and appropriately cited.

  • Multiple or Concurrent Publication: Manuscripts should not be submitted to more than one journal simultaneously.

  • Acknowledgment of Sources: Proper citation of others’ work is required.

  • Authorship: All contributors should be appropriately credited, and all co-authors must approve the final version.

  • Conflicts of Interest: Authors must disclose any financial or substantive conflicts.

  • Fundamental Errors: Authors must promptly notify the editor of significant errors in published work.


Journal History

Substantia: Jurnal Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin is an international, peer-reviewed journal published by the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Religious Studies, State Islamic University (UIN) Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Established in 1999 (ISSN 1411-4976), the journal publishes original research and scholarly articles in the field of Ushuluddin sciences, including Aqidah, Philosophy, Islamic Thought, Qur’anic and Hadith Studies, Comparative Religion, Sociology of Religion, and Sufism. Since 2017, the journal has been hosted on the Rumah Jurnal Ar-Raniry platform (http://jurnal.ar-raniry.ac.id/index.php/substantia), and is published biannually in April and October.
