Sanad Authenticity, Radicalism, and Religious Moderation in Sumenep’s Rumah Tahfiz: A Parsonsian Functional Analysis

This study arises from the rapid increase in rumah tahfiz (Qur’an memorization centers) in Sumenep Regency, which raises concerns regarding the quality of Qur’anic memorization among instructors, particularly the authenticity of their sanad, as well as the religious teachings and ideological orientations transmitted to students. The novelty of this research lies in its integrated examination of three interconnected dimensions: sanad, religious orientation, and the potential for radicalism, in order to understand the position of rumah tahfiz within local religious dynamics. This qualitative case study focuses on five rumah tahfiz in Sumenep, utilizing in-depth interviews with instructors, direct observations, and document analysis, interpreted through Talcott Parsons’ structural–functional theory. The findings indicate that only three rumah tahfiz possess a clear and traceable sanad. Overall, the instructors display a moderate religious orientation rooted in pesantren traditions and apply various mechanisms to prevent the infiltration of radical ideologies into the educational process. These findings underscore that sanad serves not only as a marker of scholarly authority but also as a significant factor in shaping a moderate and secure educational environment within rumah tahfiz institutions and the surrounding community.
