يعتقد التحويليون أن الموضوع الأساسي للدرس اللغوي هو المعرفة التي يمتلكها أبناء اللغة، وتمكنهم من إنتاج الجمل وفهمها، وتسمى القدرة على تطبيق هذه المعرفة بالكفاءة اللغوية competence، وهي معرفة ذهنية ضمنية لمتكلم اللغة المثالي بقواعد لغته تتيح له الاتصال بواسطتها. أما الأداء الكلامي performance فهو البراعة التي يستعمل بها الفرد كفاءته اللغوية في الإنتاج الفعلي للجمل وفهمها، وفي ممارسة لغته بهدف الاتصال في ظروف التكلم الآنية. تجدر الإشارة إلى أن الكفاءة اللغوية تتضمن المقدرات إنتاج عدد لا حدّ له من الجمل، وإدراكه من الناحية النظرية، تمييز الجمل الصحيحة نحويا من غير الصحيحة، فهم تركيب الجمل، ومعرفة دلالاتها ووظائفها، تمييز الجمل التي يكون بعضها صياغة جديدة للبعض الآخر.
