This study analyzes the impact of online gaming on the moral, social, and spiritual behavior of university students and examines Qur’anic responses through Quraish Shihab’s thematic interpretation in Tafsir Al-Mishbah. Using a qualitative design, the research combines library analysis with limited interviews involving six male students (aged 20–25) from the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Studies at UIN Sumatera Utara who actively engage in online gaming. The interview data were processed using thematic coding to identify recurring behavioral patterns. The findings reveal three major themes: (1) declining worship discipline and weakened self-control due to prolonged gaming; (2) reduced face-to-face interaction, growing apathy, and decreased academic motivation; and (3) diminishing spiritual awareness and self-reflection in daily digital activities. These empirical patterns are then connected to Qur’anic values such as wasathiyah (moderation), sabr (patience), mujahadah (self-discipline), and human responsibility as khalifah, as explained in Tafsir Al-Mishbah through the interpretation of selected verses from Surah Al-Baqarah, Al-Anbiya, Yunus, Al-Kahfi, and Al-Hujurat. The study concludes that Tafsir Al-Mishbah provides a relevant ethical and spiritual framework for understanding the behavioral dynamics of digitally engaged youth and offers a conceptual foundation for strengthening Islamic character education in the digital age.
